Engagement Bulletin – 11 September 2019

A key objective of our Communication and Engagement Strategy 2019 – 2022 is to ensure that the public voice is at the heart of everything we do.

To help us to deliver this we are reviewing how we use volunteers as part of the commissioning process and whether the term Lay User was the most suitable title. We launched a survey in early August asking for people’s views through this bulletin and using our internal newsletter. The most preferred name was People Champion and this is the name we will use going forward.

It is hoped that this name change will help us recruit a more diverse range of volunteers, ensuring we do our very best to represent the communities of Somerset.

We continue to develop our volunteering opportunities at Somerset Clinical Commissioning Group to ensure we embed the public voice into our work. If you are interested in finding our more about how you could volunteer and represent your community email us as somccg.engagement@nhs.net or call 01935 384022.

There is a new project that is looking at the needs and experiences of women 55 and over who have experienced sexual violence at any time in their life. This project covers the South West of the UK and will give women 55+ the opportunity to develop support services that work for them. The project will also raise awareness and challenge misconceptions around sexual violence and age.

The project is now ready to launch their South West-wide survey which we would like as many women aged 55 and over as possible to complete. The survey asks 34 questions and includes questions on participants’ experiences of sexual violence.

As a result of this survey, we will be able to identify and address the barriers to accessing specialist support for women 55 and over. We will be developing support resources and information for women 55+ which we will sharing with organisations that work with women of this age group, including both the statutory and charity sector.

If someone needs help to complete the survey or would prefer to complete it in paper format, please contact SARSAS at info@sarsas.org.uk or on 0117 929 9556. The survey is also available on the SARSAS website https://www.sarsas.org.uk/research-on-support-for-women-55-and-over/. The survey will remain live until Friday 27 September 2019.
